Daylight in horse stables

Providing daylight in horse stables offers several benefits

Daylight and Health of horse

Daylight in the stable is important for the health of horses. Natural light controls the biorhythm and a hormone is produced in daylight, which makes the horses more energetic, inducing a good mood. During nightfall, horses, like humans, produce melatonin which  makes the animals feel tired, inducing sleep.

Sufficient daylight entry into the stable is therefore essential as even with horses, a lack of daylight ensures the well-known winter dip.

Daylight tube

A daylight tube captures daylight via a dome mounted on the roof and transports the daylight down into horse stables via a highly reflective tube system. Our daylight systems provide diffused sunlight to prevent glare which could blind the horses.

Providing daylight in horse stables offers several benefits

  • Improved Well-being: Natural light enhances the mood and overall well-being of horses, reducing stress and anxiety.
  • Healthier Environment: Daylight can help regulate the circadian rhythms of horses, promoting better sleep and feeding patterns.
  • Reduced Respiratory Issues: Good ventilation combined with natural light can decrease humidity and improve air quality, lowering the risk of respiratory problems.
  • Enhanced Visibility: Daylight improves visibility for caretakers, making it easier to monitor the horses’ health and behaviour.
  • Encouragement of Natural Behaviours: Access to natural light allows horses to engage in more natural behaviours, like moving around and socialising, which is beneficial for their mental and physical health.
  • Mood Boost for Humans: Daylight not only benefits horses but also helps stable workers feel more positive and energised, improving care quality.
  • Easier Maintenance: Well-lit spaces are easier to clean and maintain, promoting better hygiene in the stable.

Overall, integrating daylight into horse stables creates a healthier, more inviting environment for both horses and humans.

Daylight influencing the horse's coat growth

Natural daylight in a horse stable helps reduce the need for frequent clipping by influencing the horse's coat growth. Exposure to daylight regulates the production of melatonin, a hormone that triggers the growth of a thicker winter coat when daylight hours decrease. More daylight keeps melatonin levels lower, resulting in a shorter, thinner coat that requires less clipping.
