Natural light, ventilation and dry light wells in Rotterdam!
In Rotterdam, Techcomlight recently completed a remarkable project for a private homeowner. Four basement light wells – or koekoeken, as they are called in Dutch – were upgraded with our durable Lucernario daylight and ventilation systems. The result: a clean, bright and well-ventilated basement, free from water, dirt and pests.
Smart Solutions for Existing Plastic Light Wells
Many homeowners assume that a Lucernario cannot be installed on existing plastic light wells. But this project proves otherwise.
Three of the systems were mounted directly onto existing plastic shafts, using a solid foundation of concrete edging stones prepared by the client. Thanks to this base, each Lucernario system was installed in just 1.5 hours.
The old wells often filled up with water, leaves and other debris — especially because the house is located near open water. With the new Lucernario systems, that problem is a thing of the past. The stainless-steel finish ensures long-lasting protection and a clean appearance. The integrated ventilation grilles are easy to remove for cleaning, making regular maintenance simple and fast.
A Custom-Built Escape Hatch with Daylight
The fourth light well was a completely different challenge: a concrete ventilation shaft measuring 3.3 metres wide and 1.3 metres deep, designed to also serve as an emergency escape route from the basement.
To meet all requirements, we combined three Lucernario units — one of them an openable model (1.30 x 1.30 m) and two custom-built fixed units (1.30 x 1.00 m). Together they covered the full opening, bringing natural light and ventilation into the basement while keeping out water, debris and insects.
Prefabricated System for Easy Installation
The Lucernario is a fully prefabricated daylight and ventilation system, suitable for both new-build and renovation projects. It can be installed on plastic, concrete or brick light wells.
The openable Lucernario variant can also serve as a service hatch — for example, providing access to pool equipment or technical rooms. Optional accessories include adapters for dryer exhaust or mechanical ventilation, making the system even more versatile.
From Standard Models to Custom Design
While most Lucernario and daylight tube systems are sold without installation through various resellers, Techcomlight also provides professional on-site installation when required.
